101 Games To Play With a Hoop

September 23, 2020 | Clara Buckley

This week we’re in the gym for our gross motor play. It’s a big, safe space. Perfect for running. Right after worship we head downstairs to play for 30 minutes.

As we explore the space the teachers also provide equipment, and time, for exploration. We brought out hula hoops and the children created many different ways to play with them.

We can jump inside the hoops

shuffle our feet inside the hoops

hold on and spin around the hoops

hula hoop

throw a ball through the hoop

roll the hoops

jump through a rolling hoop

catch a friend in a hoop

catch a teacher in a hoop

With this unstructured, unhurried time to play, children can use their imagination to create new ways of playing together. Who knew there were so many different games to play with hula hoops?!

Next week we will venture outside for our gross motor play time.

Teacher, Rivers Class; Middle School Art

Clara Buckley’s teaching spans the ages of Mustard Seed School, from the youngest students in the preschool to students in the graduating class. She’s found many similarities between teaching three-year-olds and thirteen-year-olds!

As an art teacher who never enjoyed drawing, Ms Buckley’s hope is that each child she teaches discovers a way to create art that they enjoy, whether it be sculpture, printing, textiles, architectural drawing, or collage.

Ms. Buckley loves living in Jersey City, a place whose diversity and welcome for immigrants reflects her own family experience. When planning future travel destinations, art, food, and time with family are featured items on her list.
