For Epiphany, the kindergarten received a gift from the Three Wise Men. Usually we get a visit from 8th grade students in costume, but due to the unusual nature of this year, the kings (assisted by Amazon) made a delivery to Ms. O’Dowd’s house! How convenient! On Zoom, we unwrapped our gift to find a set of basketballs!

The children excitedly asked about the basketballs as soon as they walked in to the classroom yesterday!

Today we got to try them out with a partner or small group. They explored, learned to bounce and catch, practiced dribbling, and even some underhand throwing. In PE, we will continue to get experience with these skills and more! Scroll below for pictures and videos of the children in action!

Ms. O’Dowd came to Mustard Seed in 2017, after moving to Hoboken in 2016. She found a school and a community all in one package at Mustard Seed! Having taught kindergarten in Illinois before moving to New Jersey, Ms. O’Dowd has a passion for five-year-olds. She’s delighted to be a part of the kindergarten team and loves to read and share in story with students. Her favorite moment of the day is during a good read aloud, when she looks out and sees the faces of children showing empathy and emotion in response to the story. Ms. O’Dowd’s hobbies include exploring new neighborhoods, watching BBC documentaries, traveling to visit family, and eating her way through New York City.

The children were asked: “What do you know about gardens?” Students had many ideas and recorded them on paper.  After much conversation, and sharing of their knowledge, the students formulated their own questions: I wonder what animals live in the garden? I wonder if snakes can…
