Every year, Valentine’s day is outshined at MSS by I Love Math day! This year, the 8th graders created games for the lower school classes. Teachers shared what their classes were learning and what they like to do and the 8th graders got to work.
The Moon class loves drawing and coloring and our 8th graders came up with an awesome game! They gave us some coloring sheets with numbers in the shapes:
We grabbed our coloring pencils and our 0-10 cards and got to work.
Step 1: Flip two cards
Step 2: Add up the numbers
Step 3: Color in the matching number
Step 4: When you’ve flipped all your cards and haven’t colored all the spaces, figure out which cards will get you to the number you need
This game helped us practice working with partners, math fact fluency, and combination strategies!
In the Sun Class, the 8th graders sent a video with instructions to collect a set of 40 number cards and 20 cubes. Mysterious!
With our materials in hand, we watched the instructional video. Students were directed to draw two number cards and add them together. When they found a total number, they took that number of cubes around the classroom and found an object that was exactly that amount of cubes long.
Some students found ways to make this game more challenging, like multiplying the two numbers or turning over three cards instead of two.
This game helped students practice math fact fluency, combination strategies, and measurement all in one game!
