“Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.”
This is one of the first grade Common Core standards that first graders are striving to meet this year. Their informative text comes in the form of a non-fiction book about their chosen bird.
Each week, first graders spend time learning about an aspect of their bird: habitat, nest, feet, beak, and more. They take all this learning and research and turn it into a page of their book.

Each non-fiction paragraph starts with an introductory sentence followed by detail sentences.
As they work, they use their research to check word spellings and add details. Later on, they will peer edit each others work. Then they’ll make final touches and add the books to their portfolios.
