Reading Buddies

January 26, 2023 | Bridget O'Dowd

Last week, the kindergarten students met heir reading buddies for the first time! Every Friday, the kindergarten and 6th grade will join up and enjoy a shared reading time. The groups are composed of a 6th grade buddy and one or two kindergarteners. The children take turns choosing books to read, and kindergarten and sixth grade students alike delight in sharing favorite stories. This partnership will continue throughout the school year, and it is a wonderful opportunity to expand our friendships and develop our relationships within the community.

We will continue to meet together as the year progresses and maybe even partner up for special celebrations and other events. The kindergarten children gain a friendly ally in the Upper School, and their reading buddies gain opportunities to practice leadership and develop as role models.
On Fridays you might want to ask your child: “What books did you read with your buddy today?

She’s delighted to be a part of the kindergarten team and loves to read and share in story with students. Her favorite moment of the day is during a good read aloud, when she looks out and sees the faces of children showing empathy and emotion in response to the story. Ms. O’Dowd’s hobbies include exploring new neighborhoods, watching BBC documentaries, traveling to visit family, and eating her way through New York City.
