Over the past months, the children have learned about each other and their space, learned routines, and shared in laughter. As they shape a classroom culture, some ideas emerged about what this culture should be like.
To begin thinking about this, the class responded to a reading of Have you Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud, illustrated by David Messing. In the book, people add drops to other peoples’ buckets by doing caring things or using kind words. The concept of bucket filling provided a visual for the idea of caring for others and being part of a community. It also helped the children make the connection that a person’s actions and words can affect others in different ways.
