In the first few weeks, the fourth and fifth graders have been reviewing a few reading skills such as predicting, making connections, and determining traits for the characters. In fourth grade, students have been working in small groups to target these skills, which they will be asked to demonstrate in their reading logs.
In fifth grade, we spent the first two weeks discussing how trait words are different from feeling words and practiced jotting evidence from the book to support the trait. Sometimes, it meant going back to jot and improving by picking out a better trait word and adding more evidence.
Now, students are ready to turn their notes into a reading response. We are currently brainstorming and outlining our ideas in an organizer. Next, students use that to draft their reading response paragraph. Through this assignment, the students also get to practice the writing process and understand the format of a paragraph.
Once the students have practiced together in class, the fourth and fifth graders will be assigned reading responses as homework to complete independently.
